Questions to Ask Before You Buy a Stairlift

Installing a stairlift is quite a pleasant idea when you have a two-story house or more than that. It might be a tiring job that you have to walk all the way up and then again down, all day long. So here, the stairlift is just the right option for you. But before you install it, there might be hundreds of questions striking your mind, regarding the labor charge, installation configuration, etc. so here are the answers to questions, asked most frequently by the customers.

Should I install the stairlift myself or should I hire someone?

There are several customers who took the initiative of going through the manual before installing the stairlift and then themselves that did the setup. This can be done in the case of straight stairlifts but when it comes to the curved ones, you need to hire a special engineer for this. The installers are available from the dealers themselves. They don’t charge you too high a price. Their range can vary from $125 to $500, but this is for only the straight ones.

Should I buy a new stairlift, a reconditioned stairlift, or a used stairlift?

When the factor is about money, I must say it plays a major role. When your budget is not that high, you can go for a second-hand model, which will be quite cheaper than the new one. In this case, you have to be very careful regarding the working condition of the chairlift.

Before accepting it from the seller, you should check it carefully. You can go for a technical machine that will help you inspect the condition of the chairlift.

There is a vast difference between buying it from a private seller or a reconditioned machine, directly from the dealer.

When you buy it from the dealer, they are likely to replace all the worn-out parts of the chairlift. Some of them provide you guarantee as well.

The best is if you buy a new stairlift. There the guarantee period is quite high and it is likely to last longer but it will be quite a huge blow to your pocket.

What is the best stairlift for me? Should I buy a seated stairlift, perched stairlift, or buy a standing stairlift?

This completely depends on the size of the space you want to leave for the stairlift. If you have a wide range of stairs with the perfect accommodation, then you can simply order a seated stairlift. They are scientifically the best ones as the Centre of Gravity is the lowest, in this case. For added safety, you can opt for a seat belt as well. But remember, when you have a narrow space, you have to choose a standing chairlift.

Common Plumbing Problems and How to Fix Them – DIY Plumbing Problems and Solution

plumbing-supplies

You must have encountered some distressing plumbing problems in your house. It could have been flooded or clogged toilets, dripping faucets, clogged drains, or even broken pipes with leaking or dripping water in all directions. The situation becomes worse when you have to call professional plumbers who may charge hefty Plumbing Services costs for a few hours’ work. However, you can save a significant amount of money that would have been used to hire plumbers by doing some common DIY plumbing works and fixing minor plumbing problems yourself and in less time.

Common Plumbing Problems and How to Fix Them

Most common problems in plumbing systems arise due to excessive or careless usage that causes some parts to wear out, particularly the fixtures and faucets. Blockages in the sewage water path are one of the major causes of drainage clogging. Blockages in the pipe or trap can also cause flooding of a toilet. Although a pump or a plunger can be used to handle most blockage problems, some knowledge is required to solve more critical and advanced plumbing problems.

Dripping Faucet: A dripping or leaking faucet indicates that washers have worn out and should be replaced. The seals or washers of the compression faucet are always under pressure and may wear out much faster. If the replacement is not done on time, they might corrode fixtures, stain sink bowls, and wastewater. Since ball, cartridge, and disc faucets are washerless, they’re less susceptible to dripping as opposed to compression faucets. However, they have some moving parts sealed by O-rings that may require periodical replacements. Therefore, the majority of dripping problems associated with faucets are majorly wearing out of the parts, based upon the kind of faucet.

Scaled Up Shower-Head: Hard water is usually associated with the scaling of showers. The salts present in hard water accumulate to form a layer on the showerhead, which makes it quite difficult for water to actually come out. Therefore, in case you have to use hard water, ensure you select a showerhead with a rubber faceplate. This allows you to rub and get rid of particles frequently. A quick way to fix an extremely clogged showerhead is to remove the faceplate and dip it in white vinegar for about 12 hours. A stiff nailbrush or toothpick may be used to remove the loose scales.

Bath Tub Spa Jets Do Not Work: If the bathtub spa jets stop operating, check the circuit breaker of the electrical panel to see whether it has tripped or not. If it trips, it would need manual resetting. In case that doesn’t work, check your user’s manual to see whether the pump has got a “high-limit-manual-reset” or a different circuit breaker in the system. If it has any of these, try if resetting can help.

Toilet Plumbing Problems: If water does not quickly drain away from the WC when you flush, that means there is a blockage in the pipe or in the trap from your toilet to the dust stack. All you need to fix this problem is a toilet plunger. You may also use augers or wire snakes to clear the blockages.

Clogged Drain: In case your drain is flowing slowly, it indicates that the vent system is blocked. You can use a chemical drain cleaner for clearing a slow-moving drain. You may also plunge the drain or even use a wire snake to clear the clog.

modern-interior-design-of-bathroom

The bathroom is an essential part of our home and it cannot be ignored. We all want our bathrooms to be beautiful, efficient, luxurious, and comfortable. A well-planned, renovated, or remodeled bathroom can not only add comfort to your life but also increase the value of your home.

Bathroom Improvement and Remodeling

The bathroom is one such only room in your home where everyone is going to visit sooner or later. This makes it even more important not to overlook the bathroom when it comes to home improvement.

Bathroom improvement and remodeling get more important if it is small. You need to renovate and remodel your small bathroom. You need to wisely utilize every bit of available space without cluttering the room.

Bathroom Improvement Tips

Bathroom improvement is an integral part of any home improvement project. Proper bathroom improvement can improve the beauty and efficiency of your bathroom and add value to your home. If bathroom renovation and remodeling are done under the right guidelines, it will add more value to your home than what you may spend on remodeling and renovation.

Bathroom Remodeling Ideas

Bathroom remodeling is a very common home improvement project. The key to a good and satisfactory bathroom improvement and remodeling is a solid layout and design. Planning your bathroom layout and design will not only give you a beautiful dream bathroom, but it will also add to the value of your home. More importantly, it can offer you back some much-needed independence. For e.g., the addition of a walk-in tub can drastically improve the quality of life for seniors and those facing mobility issues almost instantly. Not only will it provide anyone with safe, independent bathing, but also a luxurious spa-like experience every time you enter the bathroom.

bathroom-renovation-contractor

If you have only one single bathroom, it is a good idea to allow enough counter space so that two or more people can do grooming work at the same time. Similarly, working on other contents such as the shower, showerhead, cabinet, bathtub, bidet, floor, lighting, mirror, etc, also make an integral part of any bathroom remodeling project.

If you are remodeling your bathroom for improvement, make a list of items that you want to reuse. Work on your layout and design and contents that you want to add or remove. Write down your ideas and priorities and then work around them. Of course, you need to keep the budget and cost in mind.

Bathroom Renovation Costs

When working on the cost of bathroom renovation, keep in mind that major additions like Jacuzzi whirlpools and bathtubs may also require extensive plumbing repair and electrical work. This adds to the total renovation cost of your bathroom. Other jobs such as molding, piping, and flooring are expensive too. Do your research on the cost of these before your start renovation.

Bathroom paint and wallpaper are not too expensive. You can use these inexpensive ingredients to transform the look and beauty of your bathroom. If you have a low budget for bathroom renovation, I suggest you paint the walls with appealing colors and use inviting and attractive wallpaper. This way you can renovate your bathroom for limited money.

Tips: Bathroom renovation and remodeling, like home improvement, are major projects. You can go for DIY (do it yourself) if you have prior hands-on experience with this kind of work. If not, I would suggest you hire a contractor. These contractors are professionals who have all the necessary skills, tools, and hardware for bathroom improvement projects. A skilled and experienced contractor can add value, functionality, and beauty to your bathroom.

Home Security Monitoring Tips

Getting alarmed monitoring for your security system is one of the best ways to protect your home from a burglary. Having a monitored alarm means that whenever you turn on your security system someone will be standing by watching over your home. And the fact is that you are 3 to 4 times less likely to be burglarized if you have a monitored alarm in your home.

Most people understand that basic alarm monitoring consists of arming an alarm system and then getting a call when one of the devices is activated (like a door sensor or motion detector).

Alarm Monitoring today can be so much more than that basic type of monitoring.

With Home Alarm Monitoring today, you can:

  • Arm from the keypad or from your cell phone or computer
  • Monitor from your landline or from a wireless cellular module (greatly reducing the chance of the signal being disabled)
  • Have cameras that you can view from work or a cell phone anytime there is movement
  • HVAC controls and lighting controls
  • Live operator calls anytime the system is tripped in alarm mode or also includes text messaging of events.

Hi-Tech Alarm Monitoring

For many people, a simple alarm monitoring plan is all they want. But, if you want more high-tech options then they are available.

Our site offers you these options from the basic alarm monitoring plans to text and camera integrated systems that provide you with a more integrated home security experience.

Alarm monitoring also reduces your chances of being victimized in your own home. Arming your home security system when you leave your house will greatly reduce the chance of there being someone in your home waiting for you when you return. If you have active monitoring on your home security system not only will the siren help scare off intruders but it will also alert our monitoring station to dispatch the proper authorities to check out your home before you walk back in. But remember, alarm monitoring only works if you use it. Be sure to turn on your security system every time you leave the home and at night when you go to bed.

home-security-is-essential

You should test your alarm system once a week to once every few months, the whole process only takes a few minutes and it can be done anytime day or night. First and most important, call the monitoring station and put your security system on test. Now arm your security system and wait at least 2 minutes for the system to fully arm before walking around your house.

Now walk in front of all your motions and the siren should go off. Also, open some or all doors and windows that have security contacts one at a time. Then you can put in your code and shut off the alarm system. Now call the central monitoring station and tell them you want to check your signals. Our friendly central station operator should be able to tell you exactly which zones were breached.

Kitchen Remodeling Factors Most People Think Of Too Late

When most people think of kitchen remodeling, there are some obvious things that spring to mind. New color pallets, new appliances, storage space…

However, even when taking into consideration these, some important factors can be overlooked.

Adding Color to the Kitchen

Adding color to the kitchen is one of the most important elements of kitchen designing and remodeling. Whether your dream kitchen consists of a cozy farmhouse eatery, a contemporary bistro, or a traditional dining area, the creativity to use and add color in a budget-friendly way is very important.

Renovating the kitchen with color can be elaborate or easy depending on your own plans. Make a plan for the design first.

What are your intentions? Do you want a complete overhaul of color or simply introduce splashes of additional hues to the space?

Examine the surface of your kitchen to determine what needs to be done for designing and remodeling. You can paint the cabinetry in an array of decorative finishes. For e.g., soft, whitewashed cabinet fronts can evoke a coastal cottage, while deep-toned, distressed finishes can make a mountain retreat out of an ordinary kitchen. This is a great color combination for most kitchen designs.

You can create a monochromatic scheme by mimicking the color of the countertop, cabinetry, and wall covering. You can paint the backsplash with a deeper color than the cabinetry and personalize it with stenciled motifs. This will add powerful contrast to the kitchen. You can also customize kitchen surfaces with painted freehand techniques, such as stripes. This will enhance the look and feel of the kitchen.

Make sure not to overlook any kitchen design element. Keep the focus on all elements in the kitchen including the cabinetry, ceiling, floor and window coverings, moldings, and trim. Make a color scheme for all elements to add dynamic color to the kitchen space. Giving attention to all the elements can add some interesting spark of color to the kitchen. Try to explore the possibility of painting the chandelier hanging over the dining table, drawer and cabinet pulls, or the unfinished wooden microwave storage cart. You can perk up inexpensive shelving by painting trim, or highlighting hanging plate and pot racks with the application of an unusual paint finish and color combination.

There is stiff completion among manufacturers when it comes to high-quality kitchen paints. For kitchen cabinets, you can go for high-gloss latex paints. Designing, remodeling, or refreshing your kitchen with color can have a major impact with a minor outlay of time and money regardless of the fact that what surfaces you decide to paint.

Noise can mess up our sleep and add to our stress, infringing on our privacy. There are a number of soundproofing or noise-reducing initiatives you can take to control noise. Sound insulation or soundproofing is best done when started with the construction of the house or remodeling project because they involve the way walls or other structural elements are built.

Noise Remediation

Not many people think of noise remediation when it comes to kitchen remodeling, but this should never be overlooked.

Seal holes: Air can leak through walls and around doors and windows. This also makes a noise leak where sound can infiltrate. To stop this, you can use flexible acrylic latex or polyurethane caulk or foam sealant, seal the gaps around pipes, electrical boxes, heating registers or ducts, wires, or where any other objects penetrate the walls or ceiling. During new construction and installing switch and receptacle boxes and heating registers, never place them back-to-back in a wall.

Reduce noisemakers: We all know that sound can travel along with a solid object just as it travels through the air. When building, keep this principle in mind and choose flexible furnace ducts rather than rigid-metal ones. Try to use resilient pads to separate pipes from framing members, or fill the holes where pipes pass through with expanding foam insulation. Provide air chambers when plumbing faucets to eliminate the water hammer that’s caused when you quickly shut off a faucet. Insulate interior walls where you want to minimize the transfer of noise between rooms. Always pack insulation around pipes. Opt for cast-iron drain pipes in areas where this would be a problem.

Noise-making Appliances: When purchasing new appliances, pay a little more for the quietest models. Newer home and kitchen appliances such as conventional fans, dishwashers, etc., are quieter than their old counterparts.

Isolating Noisy Equipment: Try to isolate and enclose noisy equipment away from sleeping areas. You can have dedicated equipment rooms with insulated walls and solid core doors. Solid-core doors between all rooms can significantly reduce noise that travels through the house.
Use sound-absorbing material: Use sound-absorbing materials on floors, walls, and ceilings. Insulation tiles and can carpeting can cut noise to a great extent. Try to avoid rigid, hard surfaces such as tile, concrete, and hardwood flooring.

Child Safety in the Kitchen

The kitchen is the most important element and part of any home but it is definitely not a safe place for a young child. From its hot stoves to its sharp knives and other kitchen appliances, the kitchen is the home’s most accident-prone area for small family members.

For child safety in the kitchen star wit storing away and locking all toxic substances. A number of other safety precautions are there to take in the kitchen to ensure the complete safety of your child. Important of all is not to let a young child unattended, even for a moment, in a kitchen, whether cooking is taking place or not.

General Kitchen Safety Measures

Never let any electrical cords dangle over countertop edges. When not in use, unplug and store small kitchen appliances such as mixers, food processors, coffee makers, etc, out of reach from a small child.
Kitchen utensils with sharp blades or pointed tines should always be put away after us. Keep all knives safely beyond the reach of your child. Find an out-of-the-way place to keep aluminum foil, waxed paper, and other wraps boxed with sharp cutting edges.

Put garbage in a container with a hard-to-open lid, or store it under the sink and install a child-resistant latch on the door.
Child Safety from Kitchen Appliances

Cooktop and oven: Teach your child at an early age the meaning of “hot”, whether the stove is on or off. Make sure that your child is not underfoot when you are working at a Cooktop, oven, or other appliance with hot foods or grease that might spill or spatter. Use a stove-top guard as a barricade. If your toddler can reach the controls, remove the knobs. If an accident happens in spite of all the precautions, immediately immerse the burned area in a stream of cold water until the pain subsides. Never use ice as it may cause frostbite. Cover the burn loosely with a clean bandage and call your child’s doctor.

Microwave oven: Make sure the microwave oven is mounted at a place where the baby can’t reach the controls. If you use the microwave to heat baby food or baby bottles, make sure that the containers may not feel hot even when the food is scalding. When heating baby food, always stir and check the temperature before giving the food to your child.
Refrigerator: Some foods like wine, Picante sauce, and spoiled leftovers found in refrigerators can be toxic to children if taken in quantity. Install a refrigerator lock at the top of the door to prevent children from opening the refrigerator door. If you use refrigerator magnets, my tip would be to make sure they are too big to go into a small child’s mouth and that the magnet itself can’t come loose or it can be quite hazardous.

Dishwasher: Kids just love to push buttons. Controls of a dishwasher are like some interesting game for them. The easiest way to keep your child from playing with the dishwasher’s controls or its’ contents is to buy a dishwasher that is difficult for a child to operate and open. You may also consider locking the dishwasher door with an appliance fastener available where child safety supplies are sold. Always load knives and sharp objects pointing downward so they are not as hazardous when the door is open. Pour in dishwashing detergent just before you run the dishwasher.

Garbage disposal: If your child can reach the garbage disposer switch, there are some methods to keep him away from flipping it on. You can replace the cover plate with a locking outdoor switch cover OR replace the switch with a key switch and both of these are readily available at any electrical supply shop.

Trash compactor: Make sure that your trash compactor won’t operate when the door is open and that it can be turned on only with a key. Put the key away from the reach of your child.

Increase The Value Of Your Home With New Windows

Currently, in the property market, supply outweighs demand. It’s definitely not a seller’s market! Once a property’s asking price has lowered, it immediately becomes more appealing, but many homeowners simply cannot part with their beloved property like that.

Without lowering your asking price, there are multiple things you could do to help your home sell faster. There is, of course, always another way. Here is the one thing, that will no doubt give you the edge, and help you sell your home faster than a Windows update for your computer!

To Replace Or Repair Windows

Nobody wants to buy a home with the responsibility of replacing all of the windows as soon as they move in. A window upgrade is one of the best things you can do before putting your home on the market, as windows are arguable, the most important feature of any modern home.

By replacing your windows with higher quality products, you will not only increase your home’s curb appeal but also increase your home’s value. Good quality windows will give potential buyers the impression that you take pride in your home as well as those living under its roof.

Because home trends are ever-changing, nothing else quite compares to the impact and value of new or replacement windows. And, while they may seem like a rather expensive upgrade, windows will no doubt pay for themselves in the long run.

When buying new windows consider the following; color, maintenance, coverings, material, durability, and additional extras like energy efficiency and noise reduction.

Energy Efficiency

Today, energy-conscious homeowners are on the prowl for the most cost-effective energy-efficient windows. Why? Carefully selected replacement windows can now drastically reduce your energy consumption and save you thousands on your heating and cooling bills. In fact, replacing your conventional windows with energy-efficient windows will lower your bills by anywhere between 11% – 25%.

Because all properties lose heat through their windows, these life-changing windows have essentially been designed to keep the cold air out, and the warm air in, and vice versa.

With the variety of materials on offer, it’s important to know what will work for your home and your climate.

Here are the top 6 choices for energy-efficient window materials:

1. Wood-Clad
2. Vinyl
3. Fiberglass Composite
4. Aluminum Clad
5. Wood
6. Aluminum

The most popular designs include:

  •  Fixed
  • Hopper
  • Casement Windows
  • Double-Hung
  • Picture Windows
  • Triple-Pane Windows
  • Double-Pane

Remember that correct window installation is critical!

Even the most expensive windows will not perform effectively if they are not installed correctly.

Curb Appeal

A home is meant to be a place of comfort and safety, but it is also something to be admired.

Ask yourself, and be honest. What does your home’s exterior actually say about you?

If you’re in the market, your home’s exterior can attract potential buyers, or keep them moving along. Your property’s exterior will have people forming an opinion on the type of owner you are. Therefore, a good exterior creates the impression that everything else, including the kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, flooring, heating, and more, has been taken care of. That is why your home’s natural curb appeal is often the deciding factor in a sale.

In fact, almost 90% of agents agree that a property’s natural curb appeal was enough to clinch the deal. Yes, that’s right. Many potential buyers simply refuse to enter a property purely based on its lack of curb appeal.

All too often, though, curb appeal is the one factor that is overlooked.

While they say “do not judge a book by its cover”, that is exactly what happens! The first thing a buyer sees is a home’s external appearance, so why not give them something to look at?

If your house is on the market, make sure the exterior has a fresh coat of paint, and that your bushes and lawn are well-groomed at all times.

Improve Interior Spaces

Lighting is key when wanting to enhance the look and feel of any area. Adding a mere window or two can make all the difference to your home’s comfortability, aesthetic appeal, and interior space. The best part? It’s easier than you think.

When improving your interior space with windows, you can either replace those existing, or you can simply add new ones. If you have a rather small house or a small dark room, space is everything.

In smaller spaces, be sure to make full use of natural light by bringing in some larger windows. With added windows, your home will automatically increase in size and give the illusion of more space.

All this, without you even having to extend any rooms!

Soundproofing

Unfortunately, noise pollution has become a natural part of our everyday lives.

If noise reduction is what you’re after, then soundproof windows are what you need. “Soundproof” windows, or “noise reduction” windows, are able to create a barrier that stops unwanted sound from invading your privacy.

Remember, while you cannot completely eliminate 100% of your noise issues, you are in a position to reduce it quite significantly. In fact, leading designs are able to reduce anywhere from 90% – 95% of incoming noise, depending on the materials used, and the quality of the installation.

Once again, you will be able to enjoy peace and quiet in your own home.

New Window Replacement

No longer are windows merely panes of glass to see what your neighbors are up to. Technology has allowed the window industry to completely transform, having us, the public in awe of every new creation.

Windows do not only provide light, but the right windows can also help you lower your carbon footprint, hurricane-proof your home, and keep you safe in the worst conditions.

Whether you want to save money, or you simply want to improve the overall look and feel of your home or business with more picturesque windows, you can be sure you are making the right choice. By installing new or replacement windows, you can finally start enjoying your home again.

Quality windows are, and will always be a rock-solid investment!

Flat Roofing Contractor – Consider a Few Things Before Hiring

There are a number of things that you must consider prior to putting your trust in a flat roofing contractor with the assignment of repairing your flat roof. One of the most important factors is how well your roof drains. Your flat roofing contractor needs to make a slope that is no more than about a fourth of an inch. This ensures that water does not pool on your roof. This is the reason roofs leak if water pools.

What Kind of Base Sheet to Ask For

The next factor that you need to ask your flat roofing contractor to fix is the base sheet. It would be a good idea to have your own information in regard to what makes the best base sheet as then you will be in a better position to instruct your flat roofing contractor as to which material is best for your flat roof. Typically, you should ask for a three-ply as well as a self-adhesive base sheet which will provide your flat roof with professional quality and which when attached mechanically will allow for easy removal of the base sheet – whenever it is needed.

The third most important aspect to instructing your flat roofing contractor is to ask them to use mid-ply that also has a smooth surface that will prevent your roof from suffering from weakness and which also provides a backup layer to prevent water from penetrating into the seam of your cap sheet.

Next, you need to get your flat roofing contractor to fix the drip edge which should be done after the mid-play has been rolled down – properly and tightly. You must instruct the flat roofing contractor to lap the metal a minimum of three inches and then to seal under this lap with material such as asphalt cement that is especially suited for roofing.

The last act that you need to get your flat roofing contractor to perform is to get them to install the cap sheet while also using a full-width course that should be allowed to hang over the drip edge by about a quarter of an inch.

Moreover, it is essential to know how to employ the finest industrial roofing contractor. Cost is a significant factor as too is dependability. Contractors hired work on roofs that most homeowners cannot do themselves or work on small commercial buildings.

Decide on the Style of Roof You Want to Install

Having corrugated roofing material on your home’s roof means usually one thing, a steel roof. Corrugated roofing material installation is a steel roof installation. The mostly corrugated roofing material that contains a resin is most likely used for sunrooms. This kind of material lets the light come through more than the regular corrugated roofing material. A lot of the time corrugated roofing material and the resin type are both used together as their profiles can be matched.

So even if someone mentions clay roof tiles they too will be corrugated. This profile was designed for joining long sheets of materials that water cannot easily flow from one sheet into the other, so when these corrugated roofing material sheets are laid, they are laid with at least overlapping one wave where the joins are, for safety measures they should be overlapped by two waves, but since roofing contractors like to make more money with ordering too much stock and using as little as possible, only one overlap is done with the wave.

If you do have tin roofing material on your roof, you will have to use a lot of soundproofing in-between the roof and your ceiling, as you will hear every shower sounding like applause when it does come down. Tin roofing is usually used for stores and warehouses. It would not be a good idea to use this material for your home as in summer if you have very high temperatures, you will be sweating very soon, and the same goes for winter, as there is no real density or thickness to the roof covering itself.

Increasing Value Of The Home

When you have a house designed it is critical to know what type of roofing you will be having, as the trusses have to be designed to carry the weight of it. Corrugated roofing material is not as heavy as clay tiles if measured per square meter, and not considering this, could cause a roof that was originally designed for some light materials to be used to cave in if a heavier material was used.

Of course, a roof should be the best of quality and enhance the looks of your home. It would not make sense to put a cheap roof on a well-built home. Your home value is seriously hurt with a shotty roof job. If you can afford it, it would be wise to install a clay tile roof.
